Years in the Industry
How did you get started in the Trucking Industry?
I grew up in Fontana, California, which is the trucking capital of the U.S. I wanted to be a truck driver from a very early age. I have been in the trucking industry off and on for 30 years. After considerable time as a company driver, opted to purchase a truck and obtain authority. Being a company driver most of my career, I had to re-train my way of thinking...from employee to owner.
What about MATS is most valuable to you?
The things that benefit me the most are the educational seminars, as well as networking with other drivers and company owners. The networking is very valuable because I can gain ideas from other drivers and owners that may work for me in my company, or vice versa.
What advice do you have for other trucking professionals?
Make sure that you know how to run a business...it really has nothing to do with trucking specifically. If you do not know how to run a business, you will never survive. Make sure that you educate yourself on all aspects...regulations, rate negotiation and compliance. I have worked very hard to educate myself in this industry.
What are the reasons you would recommend MATS?
I believe that anyone in the industry should attend because of the educational aspect, both seminars and products, as well as networking. I attend seminars that help with the education and understanding of the regulations and possible changes to the regulations. You can learn so much. The vendors and products are great, but the education, the seminars...those are things you don’t get all the time. A lot of times, people want to educate you, but they want you to pay. By attending MATS, you are able to get the education and networking at no charge.
