Years in the Industry
How did you get started in the Trucking Industry?
My father started the company in 1958, so I have been around trucks all my life. I started driving when I was 16 years old on the farm. I still drive every week. We haul agricultural commodities and freight. Some local (day trips) and long haul (gone 5-6 days), mainly central and western Canada and USA.
What about MATS is most valuable to you?
I mainly go to MATS to see all the new products and meet with our suppliers. The show is huge and there’s a lot of value in seeing so much in one place. We’ve met several of our long-time suppliers at MATS. We’ve brought our Maintenance Manager for the last 5 or so years and we’ve brought a lot of valuable info back to the business. It’s great to be able to discuss any problems you’re having face-to-face with the manufacturers and see if they have any solutions in place or that they’re working on.
What advice do you have for other trucking professionals?
Work hard and people will respect that.
What are the reasons you would recommend MATS?
MATS is a great place to see new products, new tooling for repairing trucks, and to talk with others in the industry. Our business has benefited from seeing suppliers at MATS and discussing our issues and ideas. In a few cases, we’ve seen the manufacturers take our advice or implement a change that we made ourselves to their equipment. Even networking with those that don’t have a product/service that we are interested in has benefited our company. They may have an idea or maybe they’re doing something in a way that we haven’t considered.
What accomplishment(s) are you most proud of in your career in trucking?
To still be a family owned company after all these years.
