Years in the Industry
How did you get started in the Trucking Industry?
My dad was an owner-operator. I grew up watching him work on his truck and saw how much he loved trucks and took pride in his work. I bought my first truck at 18 years old (1991). We now have 8 trucks hauling asphalt, sand, salt, coal, lime, etc. in VA, WV, MD, and PA.
What about MATS is most valuable to you?
We get to meet new people in the industry. Some have become very good friends and resources. We get lots of information on products and services that we use everyday and potential new products that we are just learning about. We get to talk to companies representing the products/services we need like insurance, taxes, fuel, etc.
What advice do you have for other trucking professionals?
There’s some truth to the saying “do what you love, and you'll never work another day in your life”. Trucking is a lot of hours and a lot of work. You really have to love trucks and trucking to be successful. If you want a 9 to 5 job, you might consider another line of work.
What are the reasons you would recommend MATS?
MATS is a great learning experience. Anything trucking you need is there so it allows me to get a lot done in a very short period of time. We’ve been able to demo and research lots of new products and we’ve signed on with new suppliers as a result of getting face to face with the people behind the product.
